lead water service line replacement - Lead Water Pipes

Lead Water Service Line Replacement

Ryan Plumbing can replace your lead water service line pipe. If your home was remodeled or built before June 19, 1986, there’s a good chance you have lead water pipes or have copper pipes with lead solder joints. If that’s the case, you likely have lead in your drinking water. The water service line is the pipe coming from the street to your home. You can inspect the line coming into your house to see if it is lead using the video below.

Is a lead water service line dangerous?

The EPA has set the maximum level for lead in drinking water at zero because lead is a toxic metal that can be harmful to human health even at low exposure levels. Lead can accumulate in the body over time. Young children, infants, and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to lead because the physical and behavioral effects of lead occur at lower levels in children than in adults. A dose of lead that would have little effect on an adult can have a significant effect on a child. In children, low levels of exposure have been linked to damage to the central and peripheral nervous system, learning disabilities, shorter stature, impaired hearing, and impaired formation and function of blood cells.

Why was lead used in plumbing?

Why was lead used for plumbing pipes if it’s hazardous? Because no one knew how toxic it was way back then. Nobody connected the dots between lead and the long-term health effects it has on humans and animals. In 1986, lead was banned from new installation or repair in potable water systems. But it still exists in some homes and buildings today . Here is more information on lead poisoning history.

What can be done about a lead water service line?

If testing reveals that your water is contaminated by lead, there are several steps that you can take to mitigate the impact, according to the CDC.

  • install a water filter to reduce lead levels
  • remove lead pipes
  • remove copper pipes joined with lead solder
  • install approved lead-free pipes
